This continuum was inspired by a research framework developed by the University of Adelaide. We condensed and adapted their framework to address the needs and contexts of teachers and students in grades 6-12. The continuum reflects the varying degrees of independence students can have as they develop their research writing skill set. We hope the continuum will act as a guide in thinking about the pedagogical approach you select for a particular research writing task or student. As the note at the bottom of the continuum indicates, this is not a linear progression, but a set of approaches you and your students will move between depending on the research writing task at hand.
We encourage you to discuss the continuum with your students to develop their awareness of the intellectual and academic responsibility they will develop as they become more accomplished researchers.
